Confession time: though I bought it towards the beginning of June, I haven't actually played Marquis Hawkes's new "Social Housing" album (I know - shame on me) but now might just be the time to take the plunge. Although well-known for his inventiveness with a sampler, "Doornroosje" consists of two thunderously simple disco bangers designed to smash a dance floor to atoms within seconds of the needle descending on the 11 minute A-side "Discopuss". The real aggro though is reserved for the title track on the flip. Atoms are reduced to hadrons then it's quarks all the way to the end and any dancers still left standing are first treated for foot and heart complaints by the St John's Ambulance then awarded MBEs for services to revelry. I've said before that if you're not down with disco then you're a slave to snobbery. These two tunes hit harder than most heavy metal and dancing is so much more cultured than headbanging. Nic Brown
